Rosacea is defined as a “vascular disorder of the face that causes the blood vessels to swell in the middle area of the face in a butterfly pattern”.

It is found across the face from cheek to cheek, and Grade 3 of the condition also includes the nose, forehead and chin.

The symptoms of rosacea are as follows:

  • Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead
  • Small visible blood vessels on the face
  • Bumps and pimples on the face
  • Watery or irritated eyes
  • No comedones

Rosacea most commonly affects fair-skinned people from Northern Europe and is estimated to affect up to 1 in 10 people. It is twice as common in females than in males, although it usually effects men more seriously. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 30 and 50.

There are many theories, but the causes of Rosacea are not well understood. Some researchers believe it is an inherited disorder, others believe you are more likely to develop in due to blushing frequently. Another theory is that Rosacea is caused by the demodex mite, a parasite that lives n the follicles and feeds on sebum. Whatever the cause, there are certainly many things we can do to treat and to prevent it.

FAQs

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: Treatment is usually recommended as a course of 4-6 sessions for the MPL, and similar number for skin peels. Treatments with MPL are usually between 4 weeks apart and take approximately 30minutes.

Q: What does the MPL treatment involve?

A: You will be asked to keep your face out of the sun before and during your course of treatment. A patch test will be performed during your first visit to check that you do not react. Then your first treatment will involve application of a thick gel to the area of concern, placement of the smooth, cold glass handpiece of the laser which will fire little pulses of light on to the skin. There is a feeling of heat during the treatment and your face will be redder for a short while afterwards.

Q: How does the MPL work?

A: The MPL has 2 actions. Firstly, red thread veins absorb the light energy of the laser, which heats and damages them so that the body reabsorbs them. Secondly, the light energy warms the collagen fibres in the skin which stimulates new collagen production which subsequently improves the support of the small blood vessels thus delaying the development of more thread veins and unwanted redness.

Q: What does the LED light therapy feel like?

A: This is an extremely relaxing and pain-free therapy. An experience akin to being on a sun bed but without the harmful UV rays.

Q: Can you have both/all treatments offered for this condition?

A: Absolutely. Sometimes combining the different therapies gives the best result.
